Multimedia Technology Group
Multimedia Technology Group is a part of Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Czech Technical University. We perform teaching and research in various fields related to video and audio processing. It includes image processing in astronomy, security, assistive technologies and biology, video and audio quality assessment, hearing modeling, development of digital loudspeakers and other related tasks. Together with our foreign and domestic partners, we participate in international research projects like for instance European Space Agency (ESA) projects DEMON and INTEGRAL, projects BOOTES, MAIA, European scientific program Qualinet and others.
Video and audio processing plays an important role in various fields which often share similar demands on high-tech signal processing solutions. We have an extensive experience in digital signal processing and benefit from this knowledge in the modern, progressive fields where highly demanding image and audio processing applications are required.
Image processing plays an important role in the modern astronomy. We are focused on related imaging tasks, including, but not limited to, nonlinear imaging systems with spatially variant point spread function, image compression for astronomical applications, ultra wide field imaging systems. In the cooperation with Astronomical institute of the Academy of Sciences, we are involved in a project of the European Space Agency (ESA) called INTEGRAL (International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory). We further participate in the BOOTES project (the Burst Observer and Optical Transient Exploring System). Within the MAIA project, we study sporadic meteors and less active meteor showers by using a double station video observation.
We are active in the field of applied image photonics. We currently participate in the European Space Agency (ESA) project DEMON (BBT Materials Processing) focused on the optical quality evaluation techniques for calomel (mercurous chloride) single crystals.
Our field of expertise is also audio and video quality assessment. High Quality of Experience (QoE) is one of the most important goals when designing new multimedia systems. In order to understand the impact of various components of the multimedia system on the perceived quality, we use established subjective quality assessment methodologies. We perform research in the field of objective quality assessment measures and perceptual optimization of multimedia signal processing algorithms. In the pursuit for better understanding of the subjective quality, we are working on hearing modeling and studies of psychovisual and psychoacoustic processes.
Image analysis and processing is heavily used also in the field of cellular biology. Unraveling the structure and function of cells is a pertinent objective of innumerable research efforts in life sciences. The investigation of subcellular structures requires images with high resolution beyond the diffraction limit. Final image in super-resolution fluorescence microscopy is a result of a highly demanding image processing effort. Together with our foreign partners, we perform research in the field of structured illumination microscopy (SIM) and super-resolution optical fluctuation imaging (SOFI).
